The Judging

The awards are free to enter and the winners are selected by an independent panel of leading experts from the sector.

Judging criteria for the main categories covers:

  • Customer relations, including category management, waste management and promotions and range and product development
  • Quality assurance
  • Environmental management and efficiency
  • Business Development and
  • Skills development and training

While we welcome entries covering all these criteria, submissions must cover at least three areas, providing 500 words on each. The submissions should include key performance indicators and describe why your company deserves an award.

From the winners of the individual category awards, one company will be selected by our judging panel to be crowned Food Manufacture Company of the Year.

All companies entering the main category awards should indicate the size of their business, as we aim to create a level playing field by judging contenders in two streams: small business (under £10m in sales); large business (over £10m in sales). The best performers in each stream will then be eligible to be awarded either:

• The Food Manufacture Small Company of The Year Award or
• The Food Manufacture Large Company of the Year Award

The remaining awards are:

Industry Initiative Awards

  • Training Award
  • Supply Chain Partnership Award
  • Technology Partnership Award
  • Award for Export

People Awards

  • Site Team of The Year
  • Apprentice of The Year
  • Business leader 2020

Applicants are free to enter any of the Industry Initiative or People Awards, but will only be eligible for the overall Company of The Year Award if they enter a main category as well.

Entries are initially screened online by the judging panel. A shortlist is then drawn up and the panel meet in person to determine the winners and finalists in each category.

The only exception to this process is the Business Leader 2020 Award, which is designed to recognise leading lights and influencers in the industry for their achievements for their business and, potentially, the whole sector. Here, an initial shortlist is drawn up by the editorial team. Readers then nominate their choice of winner online and the person with the most votes wins.

The closing date for receipt of entries is Monday 29 July 2019. The winners will be revealed at a fun-packed awards evening at the Marriott Grosvenor Square, London on Thursday 13 February 2020.
